From 1987 to 2016, the Southwest Region University Transportation Center Program (SWUTC) was one of twenty-two competitively selected centers of excellence established by the USDOT. SWUTC represented Region Six of the parent University Transportation Centers (UTC) program, a major national initiative designed to foster university-based, long-term research of all transportation modes, and to attract the nation’s best students to study transportation.
Dr. Randy Machemehl directed The University of Texas at Austin research program component of Region Six SWUTC and Dr. C. Michael Walton directed the Advanced Institute educational component. Mr. Dock Burke at Texas A&M University was the director of the overall SWUTC program. The theme and goal of the SWUTC program was “Sustainable Transportation Solutions to Enhance Economic Prosperity and the Quality of Life.” The SWUTC consortium included The University of Texas at Austin, Texas A&M University, Texas Southern University, Louisiana State University, and the University of New Orleans.
