Academic Programs

Overview

Transportation Engineering in the Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering at The University of Texas covers the full spectrum of activities pertaining to the analysis, planning, design, construction, operation, and management of integrated transportation systems. The program combines a long tradition of innovation in highway and traffic engineering with cutting-edge research and academic effort in the rapidly evolving transportation systems engineering profession. It provides balanced course offerings and research in most facets of transportation, including the physical aspects of pavements, materials and geometrics, traffic operations and control, transportation systems analysis, management, financing, economics and decision-making, freight transportation and logistics, as well as fundamental aspects of vehicular traffic science and travel behavior dynamics. In addition, excellent and comprehensive support in related areas is offered within the University, including operations research, statistics and econometrics, urban planning, public policy, regional science, logistics and management, and information technology. Furthermore, other programs within the Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Department are also involved in structural, geotechnical and construction aspects of transportation facilities.

The Civil Engineering graduate program in Transportation Systems is designed to provide a strong basis of fundamental engineering principles and methodologies, complemented with an appreciation of the broader context within which transportation systems operate, as well as practical experience in conducting research. Because of the broad-based composition, our program is like a microcosm of the transportation profession. Graduate students are thus immersed in an environment which exposes them to the full breadth of transportation activities, without sacrificing the depth essential to any serious graduate pursuit. Upon graduation, the student will be well prepared to assume responsible and leadership positions with consulting firms, contractors, governments, and industry, as well as with universities and research laboratories (for those with doctoral degrees).
