Highway News

Highway News

Highway News was a newsletter created by the Texas Highway Department, based in Austin, Texas, for the department’s employees that was published for an unknown span of time. The issues in our collection range from 1965 to 1973.

The Texas Highway Department, established by the Texas Legislature in c. 1917, merged with the Texas Mass Transportation Commission, forming the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation. Then again in 1991, this department was combined with the Department of Aviation and the Texas Motor Vehicle Commission, forming the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). The department’s first responsibilities included the maintenance and construction of federal highways.

The newsletter was dedicated to community updates for employees of the department, including “In Memoriam” announcements, editorials by employees, as well as updates on changes in leadership. CTR Library has digitized the archive as part of its contract with TxDOT’s Research and Technology Implementation Office (RTI).
