Graduate Profile, Wei Sun, Ph. D.

Name: Wei SunWei Sun
Hometown: Dalian, Liaoning, China
Advisor: Drs. Jirsa and Ghannoum
Area of research: Structural Engineering

How does it feel to be graduating?
Very exciting.

Why did you choose to pursue your graduate studies at UT Austin?
The structural program of UT Austin is top 5 in US.

Looking back, what (or who) influenced you the most during your time at UT Austin?
The advice, encouragement and inspiration from Dr. Jirsa and Dr. Ghannoum influence me the most.

What projects did you work on while you were here?
I worked at the Ferguson Structural Engineering Laboratory where they conduct research on bridge design and large structures. I have been working on a TxDOT Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) project that involves the bi-directional application of CFRP anchors for shear-strengthening and design recommendations and procedures.

The application of CFRP in rehabilitation of concrete structures has progressively increased since the 1980’s because of its merit on high strength, light-weight and flexibility which provides an easy and efficient way to repair and strength concrete structures.

I helped develop procedures for quality control of the CFRP anchors, and conducted tests to optimize the anchor design.
